Henry D. Reed - Safety Analyst, Boeing Commercial Airplanes

Henry D. Reed (Hank) is a Safety Analyst with the Boeing Company in the Airplane Safety Engineering Group.  He has over thirty years of operational and technical aviation experience. In his present assignment he develops domestic and international aircraft accident prevention programs. He has supported the Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST), which is a government/industry team dedicated to reducing commercial aviation accidents, since its inception in 1998. Hank was one of the principle developers of the Boeing Airline Safety Program.  As part of Boeing’s safety outreach efforts he has shared this program with flight crews, cabin crews and regulators in China, Russia, India, Nepal and Pakistan.  His first assignment with Boeing was as a Flight Crew Training Instructor where he provided training on the B737 series aircraft.  Before coming to Boeing he spent 22 years flying with the US Army and US Coast Guard.  There his responsibilities included: Safety Officer, Aircraft Accident Investigator, Operations Manager, Standardization Officer and Flight Instructor.  Hank is rated in both rotary wing and fixed wing aircraft and has flown over 5700 hours.  

Gary Grass - Safety Management Systems Manager, Omega Aviation “Aviation Safety Management – Leadership and the Cultural Shift” 

With 29 years in aviation maintenance, flight operations, education and training – Gary holds a CPL, M1 & M2 fixed rotary wing AME license, teaching credentials and has been involved at all levels of aviation safety, training and operations management for most of his career.  Safety Management credentials were earned in 1984 while serving in the Canadian Air Force.  He taught four years in Canada’s most prestigious post secondary aircraft maintenance institution, the British Columbia Institute of Technology, and two years at Canada’s most successful IFR school, Vancouver Pro IFR.  He has lectured on Safety Management, Quality Programs and his experience as a Martin Mars pilot and engineer at many aviation conferences including Oshkosh in 2007.  He holds an elected Board and Editorial Chair position with the Pacific AME Association and is a member of COPA, the EAA, and Warbirds of America. He is the Safety Management Systems Project Manager and Quality Manager at Omega Aviation, western Canada’s largest aircraft management company.  

Glen Friesen Inspector, Transportation Safety Board

The TSB makes available factual information about the circumstances of the occurrence throughout the investigation. Safety information is shared immediately with those who can make changes to improve safety and may take the form of recommendations, safety advisories or safety information letters.  Glen has been an investigator with the Air Mode of the Transportation Safety Board for the past 9 years. Currently hold an ATPL and Commercial Helicopter license. Prior related experience includes northern float and ski charter operations to Convair captain. Glen also worked with the Vancouver International Airport Authority as an airside duty manager during the opening of the new terminal building and parallel runway and as a simulator operator in the NAVCANADA IFR controller training school. 

Anne Murray - Vice President, Community and Environmental Affairs Vancouver Airport Authority “YVR – Beyond, Every Day”

Anne Murray joined the Airport Authority in 1992 and was appointed Director, Environment in 1998, and Vice President, Community and Environmental Affairs in 2000. She is responsible for environmental management, communications, media relations and community relations. 

Jamie Molloy Vice-President Corporate and Aviation Safety, Harbour Air Seaplanes “Leadership through Safety Management Systems”

At the age of 14, he began pursuing his passion for flying by achieving his Ultralight Aeroplane Pilots License, arguably one of the youngest pilots in Canada at that time. As he advanced his aviation training, he remained an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary on the Sunshine Coast.   Initially starting out as a Dock Hand at Harbour Air, he quickly learned the logistics necessary to support a major seaplane airline. He became Ramp Manager of Harbour Air’s Richmond Base; a position he held seasonally for 3 years.  In 2001, he saw an opportunity to expand Harbour Air’s existing schedule cargo service. In November 2001, Harbour Air Cargo Express was established and Mr. Molloy became Freight Services Manager. In 2004, Mr. Molloy was appointed to position of Training and Development Coordinator and Company Aviation Safety Officer. In 2005, his title was changed to Aviation and Corporate Safety Manager to reflect the company’s focus to safety and to integrate the role of a safety manager into the corporate structure of the company under Operations.  In June of 2007, Harbour Air Seaplanes conducted a corporate reorganization and a stand-alone safety department was created. Mr. Molloy was appointed to Vice President, Aviation and Corporate Safety reporting directly to the President and CEO of the company.   

Sue Gardner SMS Implementation Manager, CHC Helicopter Corporation

Sue Gardner has been in the aviation industry for twenty-four years. She has worked in organizations ranging from Transport Canada to BCIT, ACRO Aerospace Inc. to CHC Helicopter Corporation where she currently manages the Integrated Safety Management System (SMS).  After receiving her technical training, Sue worked for ten years in aircraft maintenance. She holds a Canadian Aircraft Maintenance Engineers License and a U.S. Airframe and Powerplant Repairmen’s certificate. Sue also has held Ministerial delegation to issue aviation documents, conduct investigations, recommend sanctions and conduct regulatory compliance audits.  Today, Sue provides specialist advice and coaching to CHC Base Managers and their teams on subjects ranging from SMS to processes intended to aid in the management of Health, Environment, Safety, Security and Quality issues at the base level. The scope of her work also includes the implementation of SMS processes and tools at the bases, and the staff training and coaching required to ensure compliance and ongoing effectiveness of the Integrated SMS at that location.  From 1999 – 2002, Sue was both a Director and Founding Member of Women in Aviation International. 

Kirsten Barnes, double Olympic Gold Medallist

Kirsten is going to share some of her Olympic story to help us understand what it takes to bring together talented individuals and create a high performance team with great leadership.  She will focus on key factors that influence people potential and generate successful sustainable performance. Dr Kirsten Barnes who was a member of the Canadian Olympic Rowing Team and competed in two Olympic Games; Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992 - she won two gold medals at the Barcelona Games. In 1998 she received a PhD in Sport Psychology from Bristol University. Kirsten is now an accredited Sport Psychologist. She worked for a number of years with England Squash and England Women’s Rugby Team, Badminton England and British Triathlon Association. In 2000 Kirsten was Sport Psychologist for the Team GB pre-Olympic holding camp. Prior to returning to Canada Kirsten was employed as the National Lead for Sports Psychology in the English Institute of Sport. Since 1997 she has been an associate of Lane4 Management Group who is a Global Performance Development Consultancy with a unique heritage based on elite sporting and commercial achievement. Lane4 was co-founded in 1995 by Olympic Gold Medallist swimmer Adrian Moorhouse MBE and leading sport psychologist Professor Graham Jones. The company derives its name from the lane in which Adrian won his Gold Medal at the Seoul Olympic Games. The fourth lane is the one allocated to the fastest recorded time in the heats and is therefore most likely to produce champions. After more than 13 years in the UK Kirsten now lives back in Vancouver with her husband Terry Dillon who is also a two time Olympian. Together they bring a deep understanding of high performance and draw on their experiences in working in business with individuals, teams and organisations as well as their sporting heritage.  

 Judy Cameron - A320 Captain Air Canada

Judy was the first female pilot hired by Air Canada. She has been a licensed pilot since 1974 and has been a Captain since 1997. During her 30 years with Air Canada, Judy has experienced flying the Boeing 727, the DC9, the Lockheed L1011 , the Airbus A320 and is currently a Captain on the Boeing 767.

Capt. Hank Niewiadomski - Canada’s Air Force

Hank Niewiadomski has been involved with aviation as a pilot for 33 years, beginning with his glider licence at age 16.  He joined the Canadian Armed Forces under ROTP, graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree from RMC and went on to serve two tours as a pilot, initially as a military flight instructor and then as an CP 140 Aurora pilot with 407 Squadron in Comox B.C.  Although leaving the Regular Force in 1989, he continued to serve in the Air Reserve in various human resource capacities, mostly in recruiting and multi media at headquarters level.  In 1998, he joined 400 Tactical Helicopter Squadron as an Air Reserve Pilot, serving part time and has flown the Bell Jet Ranger and CH 146Griffon helicopter.  He has also managed squadron recruiting and personnel selection. Hank joined Air Canada in 1997 and has flown the Airbus A320, Boeing 767 and the Embraer 190 aircraft, accumulating over10,000 total flight hours. He is currently a Toronto based Captain on the Embraer aircraft and continues to serve with 400 Squadron, based in Borden, Ontario.
